John W. Daly – 2003-08-10

I was born on Aruba, N. W. I. and lived there until age twelve.  During the 1940’s, 1950’s & 1960’s, Aruba had the largest oil refinery in the world (Esso); now the island economy is based on tourism.  My family moved to Columbia in 1956 and I began my time at West Boulevard Elementary, Jeff Jr., Hickman, U. M. C, & U. M. S. L.

Fall of 1963 I began 3 years at U. M. C.  I joined a Military Police unit and soon after Robert McNamara (U. S. Secretary of Defense) included it in a 500,000 S. R. F. (active duty ready Select Reserve Force) which took twice the time I was expecting.  The unit I was in (175th Military Police) is on active duty in Bosnia as of the writing.

I joined Xerox in 1968 through their St. Louis branch and went to U. M. S. L. for 2 years in the evenings.  I was with Xerox during their 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th years.  As the end of their 10th year they were the only company in the world to become a $Billion Corporation in a ten year period of time.  Soon after, Wang  and Apple joined that category.  My two major accounts with Xerox were U. M. R. and Fort Leonard Wood.

I was homesick for Columbia and came home in February of 1972 to start Horizons Unlimited Rental Property that is mostly condominiums and apartments.  As an aside, I can assure you that another classmate of ours, Dave Griggs, offers some very nice carpet and vinyl products.

I feel very lucky that my parents retired to Columbia and I appreciate what an exceptional area it is.  I am really looking forward to our reunion.
