Do
you remember the Missouri Theatre?
Hey Kewpies, did you know that Hickman High School opened
in 1927? And did you know the very next year the Missouri Theatre
opened for business. How many times can you remember sitting in the
Missouri Theatre to see a movie during your years at Hickman High School?
I can remember my first movie date at the Missoui Theatre, rode to town
on the city bus and sat on the last row of the balcony to see Burt Lancaster
in the "Rainmaker." I remember seeing Elvis Presley in "Love Me Tender"
in 1956. I can remember sitting on the front row of the balcony at
the Missouri Theatre the night of the Senior All Night Party to see Tony
Curtis in "The Rat Race." I can remember standing in line all the
way down Locust to 8th Street to find out you couldn't get a ticket.
How many times do your remember going to a movie at the Missouri Theatre
with your parents? Needless to say if you lived in Columbia and attended
Hickman High School, it's not likely you don't remember the Missouri Theatre.
Now the Missouri Theatre is called the Missouri Theatre
Center for the Arts. There is currently a project underway for restoration
of the theater that could use our help. Dave Griggs,
Class
of 1963 is a Co-chair of the steering committee and Diane Reese Groshong,
Class of 1959 is also on the committee to help raise money for this worthy
project.
